Foil holiday criminals
SHOPPING
- Shop during daylight whenever possible. If you must shop after dark, bring a friend or family member.
- Don't carry a lot of cash, and put half of it in each of your front pockets so that pick pockets can't take all your cash in one sly move.
- Don't carry too many packages. It's important to have good visibility and the ability to move to avoid any mishaps.
- Be aware of strangers approaching you for any reason this time of year. Many con-artists try a variety of methods to distract you long enough to take your money or belongings.
- Keep an eye on children while shopping. Teach them to go to a store clerk or security guard if they get separated from you. Make sure they know their first and last name. Keep children 4 and under in a stroller.
- Try to shop during weekdays when it's less crowded and easier to keep track of children.
Consider using a babysitter while you shop.
ATM
- Use during daylight.
- Use the mirrors near the top of the machine to monitor if anyone is approaching you.
- If someone is loitering near the machine, pass it by and find another one.
TRAVEL
- Print out maps so that you know where you are going. Also check for construction detours and weather conditions.
- Let a friend or family member know where you are going and when you'll arrive. Also let them know your route.
- Be sure to bring your cell phone fully charged and the charger.
VECHICLE
- Park near the store, as close as possible to lighted areas. Remember where you parked so that you'll know right where to go when you come out of a store. Keep your doors locked and windows rolled up. Also keep at least a half tank of gas so that you don't end up having to stop in an unsafe area to get gas.
- Make the habit of checking your gas gauge every time you get into your car.
- Keep your vehicle maintained to avoid breakdowns.
- If you experience a breakdown, pull as far onto the shoulder of the road as possible. Turn your emergency flashers on and call for help using your cell phone right away. You could also raise your hood. Then wait inside your locked vehicle.
- If a stranger stops, speak to them with your window only rolled down slightly. Ask them to call for help if you don't have a cell phone.
- On longer trips, bring food, water and extra blankets.
- If involved in a collison in an unsafe or unfamiliar area, signal the other driver to follow you to a safe location. If you can't proceed, honk and ask a passerby to call police.
- If a vehicle that is not clearly marked as a police car is signalling for you to stop, wave at the vehicle, signalling it to follow you if you are not in a safe area. Use your cell phone to call 911 right away to describe the vehicle that is following you and to receive directions and help.
- Have your keys in your hand when walking to or from your vehicle so that you can stay alert while walking.
- Stay alert by looking around for areas that someone may be hiding, including in your back seat, under or behind your vehicle.
- Place packages in your trunk or on the floor of your vehicle covered up so as not to attract holiday thieves.
- Stand up straight and notice what is happening around you.
- Notice your surroundings while loading packages into your vehicle. If someone approaches, get into your vehicle and lock the door until they leave if you feel threatened.
- Avoid dark areas, short-cuts, cul-de-sacs and suspicious persons.
- If you're followed, make several right turns to verify. Be sure to stay on main streets. Also write down the vehicle's desription and license plate number.
ON FOOT
If followed
- Cross the street
- Vary your pace
- Change directions
HOME
- Many door-to-door sales are fraudulent and should be considered with caution.
- Be sure doors and windows are locked.
- Don't display presents were they can be seen through a window.
- Use timers to keep lights on in the rooms you most commonly use. Criminals will recognize a pattern when a different light starts coming on in your home at the same time each day.
- Ask neighbors to get your newspaper and mail.
- You can also ask them to park in your driveway part of the time.
- Large empty boxes should be folded up and placed in the trash so as not to attract attention from thieves looking for expensive items that can be found after the holidays.
Committed to your safety,
Al Abidin

Criminals fear this
What we must understand is that when a criminal attacks us on the street, that 99.9% of the time, only a greater, more powerful degree of violence will stop him.
It must be initiated suddenly so that it overwhelms him before he has a chance to hurt you.
This is possible using a simple combat program that teaches you how to move quicker than other people can, with more power.
This is real! So many people have used this combat program to defend themselves when attacked. The results are unprecedented.

Read my article (below) in the October issue of Police Magazine.
Enjoy,
Al Abidin
Countering Blind-Side Attacks
Blind-side attacks against officers are often successful because many cops think nothing can bedone to thwart them and therefore little effort is spent on learning to counter them. Consequently, cops are injured, disabled, and even killed by blind-side punches.
But I'm here to tell you that blind-side attacks can be thwarted and countered.
That's right, countered. You don't want to just survive a blind-side attack; you want to gain the advantage against the suspect who initiated the attack.
So let's look at how you can prevent blind-side attacks, how you can survive them, and how you can take the fight to the bad guy after he attacks you.

Hang up on him
Also, this person who has too much time on his hands will have no reason to bother you any further, even in the unlikely event that he has your address.
The sooner you hang up, the sooner you can get on to things that you enjoy.
Ending the call right away makes it very unlikely that the encounter will ever lead to a physical encounter, even if you live in a small town.
The best self defense is to avoid having to defend, if possible.

QUESTION on Yahoo! Answers
does anyone know what Hikuta is, is it for real and does it work? And how do you learn it?
Basically I am looking for a martial art that is easy to learn, based on the rational that if it is easy to learn i will be easy to use it in a tight situation.
A Freind found some infomtion on the internet relating to hikuta. This martial art claims to be very easy and quick to learn and makes some very good claims as to its effectivness. I have tried looking at all the major MA and infomation sites including (but not limited to) hikuta.net, hikuta.com, wikipediea, bullshido, the martialist, and am unable to make a decison about it.
Some people think it is the most effective martial art ever, others think it is a load of BS. So I was wondering if anyone could give me some more information please?
Including
1. is it easy to learn
2. does it work
3. does anybody train hikuta
4. has anybody used hikuta in a real fight
5. how long does it take to become proficient in this art
6. Is it worth the money and time
7. how can I learn it (if it is not bs)
8. can it be learnt from a DVD?

My understanding about Hikuta is that it is a close combat style, like what they teach in the military, thus it's easier to learn.
In the military, they don't have years and years to teach a soldier how to survive a close quarter combat fight, so they focus on proven, very simple techniques that are easier to learn.
They accomplish this in just a few weeks.
My experience using Hikuta is that when something happened, I defended using a reflex action called the startle, so it was very quick.
When the attack came I didn't have time to think "am I supposed to up block or down block" it just happened and I was surprised at how fast I moved using Hikuta's transformed "Startle". One touch from me and the attacker was on the ground.
I spent time in martial arts and they are great! Wonderful discipline, balance, focus and a lot more.
However, to be good at defending in a real combat encounter it takes about 10 to 20 years or more of martial arts training.
I learned Hikuta in about 6 months using the materials put out by Al Abidin.
He has the second Hikuta website that you referred to in your question.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

An Observer
It had been awhile since I was in a traditional martial arts class, so it was an interesting experience. I had forgotten how complex the martial arts were until, John starting showing a series of moves.
As he counted off 1, 2, 3 I noticed that there were actually about 6 or 7 parts, thus making it difficult to follow, although he probably did make his version of hapkido simplier than the original.
John then proceeded to say that they use no stances, after which he stepped back into a stance. However, he did correct himself, saying that they just have the one stance.
I've always struggled with having to do 'things' before defending. (example: getting into a stance, bringing my hands up [which signals that I'm ready. So much for retaining the element of surprise. Oh well.]
Overall John did a great job of presenting his material and it was fun to watch.

How to Defend Against a Knife Attack
Below the article, I’ve listed some tips on what you can do when you are confronted with this type of attack.
Teen Denies Knife Attacks That Injured 28
A teenager suspected of attacking 28 people with a knife in a rampage has denied being involved, officials said Saturday, despite dozens of witness statements and the seizure of the weapon.
The 16-year-old student is under investigation for attempted murder after he was apprehended late Friday at the scene.
Police said the youth, whose name has not been released, had told them he had been drinking heavily during the celebrations and could "remember little" about what happened next.
It could be some teenager drinking, or a drug addict robbing people to pay for his next fix or it could be a gang member who comes after you with a knife.
If you have something in your hands like a purse, briefcase, keys, coins, jacket, etc; toss them at the attackers face to distract him and kick him with your heel, in a stomping manner, as though you’re stomping on the ground, only now you’re stomping a person who is standing.
Try to stomp somewhere between his knees and his stomach. This will make his head come forward, at which time you should quickly slam your forearm into his head, all the while keeping away from where the knife is pointed. If possible have your knee straight when doing this stomp so you’ll have more power and better balance.
Using your leg to stomp the attacker’s body will slow him down or stop him, and since your leg is likely to be longer than the attacker’s arm, the knife won’t even be long enough to cut you.
Apply a second kick if necessary or as many as needed to stop the attacker. When he goes to the ground, get away or stomp him some more to be sure he can no longer attack anyone. If the knife comes out of his hands, kick it far away from him and then get away.
Sincerely,
Al Abidin

If you get shot you can still defend!
Police believe this incident was between gang members, and according to the
article the victim survived.
The point I want to emphasize is that if you ever get shot you can do something about it.
There have been times where a person was shot 12 times and they survived.
It might be the most horrible pain you ever experienced or you might not even feel it.
The dangerous part is if you cover up because of the pain or the surprise, and curl up on the ground, you'll have just become a practice target for the shooter, and he'll probably keep
shooting you until he runs out of bullets. (But you're not going to sit there and take it. Now you're going to go after him.)
If the shooter is 10 to 15 feet from you, as they are in most shootings, then it's best to
move toward the shooter. The reason being, if you turn and run, you'll be so close that he'll
easily be able to shoot you several times in the back, unless you're able to dive for cover
and quickly get away. Normally it's best to move toward the shooter, especially if he hasn't started shooting yet.
Just explode toward him, without telegraphing anything. (this is how all of our moves are
in Hikuta) When you get to him, hit him in the throat or chest with an open hand strike.
Stomp your foot at the same time you strike to add a lot more power.
When you're close and you explode toward the shooter, he doesn't have enough time to react,
giving you the advantage.
To see how we defend against things like this, check out our videos and our training.

pretty intense. The main character, Ethan Hunt, displayed an extreme
desire to stop the bad guys.
Intense desire can be very helpful for just about anything you do. Even
for defending yourself. If you have no training, intense desire to survive
can help overcome tremendous challenges. Just remember, the sooner
you take action the better you chances of surviving a violent encounter.
If you want to see 'intense desire' go see the movie, as a sample of the
attitude we all need; the passion we need to put into everything we do,
whether it's defending ourselves, doing our job or caring for our family.

How to Survive a Mugging
Just as suddenly as this tragedy happened, so also muggers suddenly attack their victims overwhelming them to rob them and sometimes kill them.
Here are 5 things you can do to Survive a Mugging:
- Watch for anyone trying to distract you by getting in your way or asking you a question. Also pay attention to sudden sounds, where someone might be running toward you from the side or from behind.
- Keep moving no matter what and keep looking all around to stay alert. A moving target is a hard target.
- Stand up straight and keep your head up to stay alert.
- Watch out for persons who are a different race than yourself, especially if there are two or more.
- Avoid shortcuts and unfamiliar territory. You might need to cross the street to avoid a potentially dangerous person.

Well done week and one self-defense tip
Here's a tip that I've mentioned in the past but its so
important that I wanted to bring it up again.
When in public one of the most important things
you can do when confronted is to keep moving.
A moving target is a hard target to hit.
One more thing; decide right now before you
even go out the door that if someone ever tries to
take your life that it will cost them their life.
This will give you the mind set that will help
strangers realize that anything they try to do to
you will cost them dearly.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Al Abidin

Local Police demo
although at the end one of their sergeants asked me a question and then
proceeded to criticize the Koga system currently used by their department, saying
that they should use more strikes and kicks to stop the bad guys.
Unfortunately, I couldn't think of a good interuption to try to stop them from
a heated verbal exchange of words, so I left without much of a chance to debrief
and get some feedback with the training staff,
However, they were all very polite and professional with me and I'm grateful
I had a chance to meet with them.
Let's switch over to the issue of strikes and kicks:
The feedback I'm getting from my police officer friends is that many departments
no longer teach strikes and kicks to try to get around the liability issues involved.
Evidently, a large number of criminals, when caught in the act of a crime, who then
resist arrest and end up getting hurt, well they sue the police.
So many police departments are trying to use self-defense methods that won't hurt
the suspect, which can be quite a challenge, especially when the suspect is trying to
hurt or kill the officer.
Oh well all in a days work.
Have a wonderful day!

Just Keep Moving
to keep moving.
This will help you because a moving target is a harder target to hit.
It will also force you to keep breathing, so that you'll think more clearly.
So if someone steps in front of you, just quickly step around them
to get past them, keeping alert in case they approach you from
behind.
Have a great day!

A protester with a Matt Furey sign
of a person demonstrating out in front of the U.S. District Court in Alexandria, VA.
What caught my attention was the sign he was carrying. It said 'Defend America',
with MattFurey.com written below it.
Wow, here was an associated press article that surely was used in numerous newspapers across the country and Matt Furey got some real good free advertisement.
I just have two things to say about this:
1) Good for you Matt.
2) All protesters see me about adding my website Hikuta.com at the bottom of your sign
in bold letters so I can get some free advertising also.
Switching gears, have you checked out our self-defense DVD's to see how easy it is to learn.
Well, click here now to see them.

Cooperating won't save you
Ryan cooperated with the carjacker and put up no resistance, yet the ruthless carjacker killed him anyway.
So much for the theory of 'just give him want he wants so he won't hurt us'.
All too often these ruthless criminals will kill for no apparent reason.
Whenever a criminal comes at you with a weapon, its vital that you knock him down and out if you want to survive.
So how will you do this?
1) With a gun?
-It could work, but it takes a lot of training, and if you don't have a permit to carry it, you'll end up in jail, and if you shoot him might still end up in jail and you'll probably be sued by the criminal's relatives.
2) Get a dog?
-Dogs will often get scared in a violent situation and run away.
3) Carry pepper spray, a knife, etc?
-These could work, IF you can get them out in time. Unfortunately most attacks are by surprise leaving you no opportunity to use these items.
One could describe these items as pacifiers. They make you feel secure, however they really provide no value because in a real life situation, the criminal is not going to pause for you to get these items out. There won't be a 'Take Three' like in Hollywood where they do it over if you don't get it right. On the street you've got one chance to stop the attack and you better stop it quick.
4) Learn martial arts?
-Sure if you have 5 or 10 years to gain enough skills to qualify as a beginner on the street.
Even then, you'll be learning how to fight one person at a time, when a vast majority of street attacks are made by two or more criminals.
When asked what he would do if two people attacked him, Brazilian jiu-jitsu expert Royce Gracie said he wouldn't fight.
5) Learn a combat art?
-Good luck in finding one that isn't just a mixture martial arts that some well-meaning instructor thought would work for you.
6) Learn boxing or wrestling?
-Again this is preparing for one attacker. Good luck.
7) Learn a professional art?
-This is how you can gain the skills necessary to stop any attacker.
Kuta is a professional art developed by a group of professionals in several different fields of expertise.
These professionals looked at every combat system in existence, at least all the ones that had proven to be effective in real life or death situations, and they designed a professional art so powerful that, in the words of the late DOK Lee, a half-power strike would crush the enemies chest and a full-power strike would knock bones out of the other side of the enemies body.
This is why whenever someone even with minimal training in Kuta (also known as Hikuta) defends in a real-life encounter, the attacker is instantly sent to the ground. Little does the attacker know that he's very lucky that the defender only practiced off a video for a few hours.
Click here to see how you can start to have these skills.

Self-Defense for Two Marines
Today I spoke to two Marines. One on active duty, the other is now a civilian.
The one on active ordered my video earlier this year and just practiced with a
friend a few times and his friend was able to defend himself against three attackers
recently. This really caught his attention and so now we're going to put together a seminar for him
and some other marines along with him.
The training will include the highest level of combat techniques I've ever taught
anyone because these marines are leaving next month to be in a combat zone.
The other marine who is now a civilian ordered our 'Extreme Combat' DVD,
our Women's Self-Defense DVD and our Kid's Self-Defense DVD.
Not only that he asked what else I have, so I told him, we just filmed 3 new videos last weekend
to add to the other 3 we will soon begin production on.
The 3 newest videos will be available on DVD and will show detailed training on Kuta Strikes (Volume One), Kuta Kicks (Volume Two) and Escaping Holds (Volume Three).
These new videos will include a video testing portion at the end of each one so that after
you practice, you'll have a test to take, which you'll be instructed how to videotape yourself
so that you'll be able to send it to me to personally evaluate your progress.
I'll let you know when we're in final production on these.
Have a fantastic day!

Burbank Police demonstration went well
I showed weapon retention moves for when the bad guy tries to take an officers gun in a variety of scenarios.
I believe this demo will lead to some contracts for me to teach or at least add more students to my upcoming weapon retention class.
Tomorrow I'm teaching some kids how to avoid getting bitten by a dog, and what to do if they are bitten. I'm looking forward to it.

Self Defense instructor and now rotary speaker
Well, I'm going to speak to them for about 30 minutes on 'How to survive a mugging'.
Good timing. I just published an email on how to survive a mugging. Click here to get your free copy of it.
Simple, yet powerful.
(What does this mean? Well it describes the self-defense method I teach. I learned it from an ex-marine and its so different. It uses reflexes, simple gross motor skills [these are the only skills your body has functioning during an attack, Thats while complex methods fail] and natural movement. Its easy to learn and you'll be able to respond automatically whenever you're attacked. You'll move so fast you'll wonder what you did, and so will the bad guy as he tries to stand back up. The name of the system if Hikuta.)
Are you craving to know more? Well, go ahead, click here to see what Hikuta is all about.

TREXPO was very interesting
The training I've put together for them is based on reflexes, gross motor skills, natural movement and the principle of using one's entire bodyweight to deliver a strike so powerful that only one will knock a bad guy down.
This training also uses a loose fist, no blocking, proactive approach- to make the user win any confrontation.
The event itself was only the first step. We will now begin following up with all those who expressed an interest in seeing more of what we offer.
To be continued when I have a chance to write more about this topic.

Dog but no K9 sergeant
with one of the top K9 police sergeants in southern California.
Twice he was called out, and the third time he had a family emergency, so finally I'm scheduled to meet with his top trainer next week, however the trainer wants to do the interview off camera.
Although we are going to be able to put some dogs on camera.
To this I will add the information from the phone interviews I did with two
animal control officers and one other K9 officer.
So the video on 'how to defend against a dog' will come out on April 3, 2006 to be released as our first monthly newsletter video.
Several of my readers have asked how and when they'll be able to sign up, so I'll put up the information just as soon as possible.
Don't miss our video newsletter. This video will give you some revolutionary skills to help you protect yourself from dangerous dogs. You'll also be able to teach it to others.

Police car, pictures and fun
that I'm an exhibitor at in Los Angeles on March 15 & 16.
There we are guns, shotguns, knives, bullet proof vests, I mean we were loaded down
with weapons and had just finished a series of pictures, when we turned to see the wide-eyed
janitor who had just walked in.
His eyes got real big as he looked around at all the weapons we had on our belts, in our hands and on the table next to us.
Then his look turned to that of someone who was quite nervous, so I told him we were doing a photo shoot for an upcoming event, which seemed to calm his nerves.
After we finished indoors, we went outside and took some pictures with someones old car and a police cruiser.
We set up as a traffic stop that turned violent with the bad guys losing big.
I'll grab some of the pictures and post them on our picture page and I'll let everyone know when they're up.

More riots injure 9 inmates
That was a recent headline in the newspaper, to which I say, 'no kidding, you
don't say, really? just because some liberal judge decided not to keep the gangs,
or should I say ethnic groups segrated.
I use the terms gangs and ethnic groups as the same because, in prison and on the
outside almost members of any particular gang are of the same race.
These gangs fight against other gangs of a different race and sometimes even against
other gangs of their own race if they feel that their turf is being invaded, or even
they want to take over another gangs turf.
Anyway, back to the story.
For years prisons in the U.S.A. have kept their inmates segregated by race to lessen violent behaviour, but some judge, who probably has never seen the inside of a prison (I took a tour of one once, actually it was Alcatraz, just pay $15 and you can seen it too) decided that segregation was a bad thing and that is was showing racial prejudice.
We'll no, actually it was showing common sense. It averted a whole lot of violence.
But hey, why let history, experience and all the facts be considered when making a decision;
a politically correct decision at that.
Well, we'll have to recruit more conservatives for the bench, or at least some liberals who are not so misguided and brainwashed by the liberal american press.
Whew! I'm glad to get that out.
Anyway, have a wonderful day.

Street Fighting Moves
The TRUTH is that most videos on street fighting and the 'experts' who make them will lead you down a path that forces you to play by the mugger's rules which means you'll lose; and if you have no training at all you'll still have to play by the mugger's rules and you'll lose.
BUT;

Do you have Self-Control
"Man allegedly killed girl for taking yogurt"
This article in yesterday's paper is about a 7 year-old girl in
It was difficult to read being a father who happens to have a 7 year-old girl.
Anyway, apparently, the step-father of the girl had little patience for her unruly habits of breaking toys, taking milk from her siblings, taking money from her parents and breaking their computer printer. The last straw came when she took a cup of yogurt from the refrigerator that she wasn't supposed to have.
If anyone reading this doesn't have enough yogurt or whatever and is tempted to harm their child because of it, get some help!
Okay. I’m a father of a 7 year-old, who’s done ranting, so…
Back to the story:
The girl’s name was Nixzmary, and after she took the yogurt, Cesar, the stepfather, went into a rage, stripping off her clothes and beating her in front of her mother. Then Cesar dragged her into the bathroom and repeatedly dunked her head under cold water. He then carried her lifeless body and tossed her into a small room.
This story reminds me how important it is to have self-control, because if you don’t you could end up like the step-father who is now going to serve 12 years in prison.
Developing self-control isn’t easy, especially if your parents didn’t model it for you.
Most of you reading this have all the self-control you need, however for those few who need more of it, here are some ways to get more of it:
- Get a good book and read about it. (I did a search on Amazon.com and found 1,893 results for books about self-control. So there are plenty of books available.)
- You could also talk to that person in your life that you look up to as someone who is wise, someone who has been around for awhile. (Preferably someone who displays self-control.)
- Counseling at a local church or synagogue has helped many people overcome weaknesses and bad habits.
- If you know someone else who’s in a similar stage in life, who also wants to be a better person, you could ask them to be your accountability friend.
This means you and the other person make a commitment on things you will or won’t do and also that you’ll talk every week or so about how you’re doing. (Ideally this would be someone of the same sex if you are married.)
