Guns in Compton

'Compton's gun trade a success' was the title of a recent article about an event held in Compton, California, which doesn't seem like a success to me.

Here's why. The bad guys, (drug dealers, gang members) won't be turning in any guns,
at least not any good ones that they use to spread violence and sell drugs around town.

The only ones who would be likely to turn in their guns are the average citizen who might
need some cash and has a gun in the house. The problem with this is that they will no longer
have the guns when one of these drug dealers or gang members mistakenly knocks down
their front door, shooting at them. They won't be able to shoot back.

Ah, but the gun trade was a 'success', well I say a success for who?

As a quick side note regarding the 'Big Kuta videos:
Many have asked when these will be done, because this has taken
much longer than anyone expected. Well, heres the quick version
of what happened.

My video person tried a new video camera for this one event. It was one
of those DVD camcorders, and wow, what a mess! That led to one problem
after another. (He has returned to his 3 chip, mini-dv production quality
camera so this shouldn't happen again)

Each step of the way, capturing, editing, finalizing, rendering
took unusual measures to complete. And, well anyway, its all in the hands
of my dvd man now who tells me he'll be burned the footage to disk this weekend.

So, next week look for an email about 'Big Kuta videos'. Also I'll put up some
more video clips of the event.

Thank you so much for everyone being so patient.

Have a fantastic day!

Fat bandit nabbed

The "Overweight Bandit," suspected in at least 10 bank robberies, including one
in Long Beach, was captured in northeastern Los Angeles Tuesday, according to
the FBI.

Don't let greed land you in prison for such a foolish act as this man did.

Crime doesn't pay, only hard work and perserverence does.
You are not victim and neither am I. Each of us is in control of their lives
and how hard and smart we work determines how successful we'll be.

If we work hard with diligence, in time it WILL pay off, but we have
to be patience. Success doesn't fall out of a cracker jack box. It takes time.
If it did come quickly, we probably wouldn't appreciate it.

Have a great day.

Sweet and Sour

Christmas will be here in a few days. We're about as prepared as we
can be, and with all the fun and joy that goes with it, there are still
those who make our heart grieve. Those who we love, yet they
somehow don't seem to return it back to us.

We just go on. Do our part. Do what is right. Be kind and courteous,
sometimes firm, but loving, and in some cases, we just suck it up.

We realize that life does have many blessings, but with the sweet
always goes some sour.

If you see someone who isn't smiling. Give them one of yours.
Be kind and help someone who needs help. Look for opportunities
to help another person.

The life you bring joy to will be your own.

It truly is better to give than to receive.

Have a wonderful day!

Defending at Disneyland

I brought my family to Disneyland today, and wow, was it crowded.
I instructed my kids, as you should any small children, to stay close
to me, within sight. I did have to remind them a few times, but overall
they did as told.

When you are out somewhere with small children, it's a very good idea
to stay alert, and also to tell them that you expect them to stay close.

You could also tell them that if they want to stop and look at something
that they are to get your attention first, AND get you to confirm that its
okay, AND that you turn and stop to watch or go with them.

If you don't have kids, but happen to go to a crowded place, try to keep
your wallet in your front pocket so its harder for a pick pocket (thief)
to steal it.

Try to walk around the thickest part of the crowd to avoid get bumped
or possibly even trampled if violence were to happen.

Have a wonderful night.

Self Defense Demo was great

Our self defense demo went very well.

One of my police officer students assisted in demonstrating
how to move quickly from a variety of awkward positions
to be able to deliver a powerful strike.

I also picked one volunteer to learn 3 self defense techniques
right then and there. I taught him:
  1. How to use keys as a powerful, yet discreet weapon.
  2. How to use an open hand in a powerful manner.
  3. How to escape a front choke.

This took about 3 minutes and he was able to perform
all three moves.

That's it for today.

Feel free to post your comments.

Self Defense and Christmas

I met a man at a Christmas party this weekend, who told me he
never took self defense lessons because of all the traditions,
bowing, kata, and other non-self defense oriented activities
that are common to martial arts. He said this after I mentioned
that I teach a reality-based self-defense system that has
no traditions, no bowing, no uniforms, no blocking (yes that's
right no blocking; we have a continuous attack system in
Kuta) no asian words to learn, etc, etc.

He referred to an incident where a large drunk person was
being beligerant to him and his family, and he said that
since he didn't know any self defense he just acted real
passive.

Time out for a second:
Now I realize that there is a time
to speak up and a time not to speak, however it sounded
like a dose of self confidence with some firm but clearly
stated words would have resolved this man's situation
without incident.

Back to our conversation:
This man told me he was concerned that he wasn't very
tall and often he had been confronted by someone bigger
than himself, however he really would like to be able to
protect himself and his wife if necessary.

Our conversation shifted as he asked me about my
training. I mentioned my seminar a few weeks back,
including the fact that someone who was a first time
beginner, and was smaller than he, was able to deliver
devastating blows after our two day seminar.

The first time beginner was able to abruptly stop
our moving dummy on wheels, which weighs in
at over 350 pounds when someone is pushing it

This caught his attention, as well as when I told
him that I teach with PowerPoint, video clips
and an assortment of training gear including the
life like dummy on wheels and so he going to attend
one of our next seminars. Click here to see when
they are.

Broken Window...I Might have to Defend Myself

Today I replaced a broken window on my house. I recommend to
everyone that they replace any broken or cracked windows as
soon as possible. The reason is because it is easier for someone
to break into your house. All the have to do is just break the window
a little more and then reach in to unlock it, slide it open and climb in.

They can do this with little noise, giving you less chance to be
alerted by any sounds.

Self defense & sixth-sense after dark

Here is an email that I received recently that contained a great question so I've decided to share it with you here.

Enjoy,Al Abidin

Instructor Abidin,

First of all, thank you for all your contribution to self-defense.

I'm a college student studying Isshinryu Karate and Shaolin Kung-Fu. I might be fixing to start with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as well.

Within this past week, I have been approached by two people - one guy who was homeless, and another who promised he "wasn't a bum" and from a respectable local neighborhood. Both were smaller than me (I'm 21, slightly over 6 ft tall, and about 178 pounds if that helps as a comparison). During each situation, it was a cold and windy evening well after dark.

I've already talked to one of my teachers about the former, and I know that helping someone is an individual decision.

I felt bad for not helping any of them, but I hesitate to say "how can I help you." Do you have any suggestions for this particular case?

By the way, I told both of them "I can't help you sir" and walked away. Looking back, I realize the mistake of turning my back as I walked off. Both of them had coats/baggy clothes that could harbor weapons.

Sorry my e-mail is so long. Thanks once again.
All the best,

Hello,

Thanks for your email.

I must say that your observation skills are greater than 90% of
everyone else. You described the two persons in question in
much detail.

In regards to the two people who approached you, I agree with
you, it is an individual decision whether or not to help them.
Neither I or anyone else could tell you what you should have done;
however since you've been kind enough to ask my humble opinion,
I'll give you my thoughts.

Anytime someone approaches you and you feel uneasy, its
normally for a good reason, especially if its a stranger. We
have been given a sixth-sense, that makes us feel uneasy
when danger is around the corner, or in this case, standing
right in front of you.

I recommend leaving the area whenever you sense something
isn't right, just the way you handled the situation that you
described to me.

As a side note; I've talked to those who work with the needy
and the homeless in shelters, and they say that any
money given to this type of person will go to buy drugs,
and or alcohol, and that if we give anything we are enabling
their habit. They say that its better to offer them food,
which I have done several times. When they asked me
for money, (during daylight, in a public, and crowed place)
I asked why and they said they were hungry, so I asked
them if they wanted me to get them some food and
they usually say yes. So I would go and get them some and
return to give it to them. On one occasion the
person was gone when I returned with the food,
but all the others they were there and quickly
started eating.

The last time I bought food for a homeless
man, I walked into a fast food place with
him, let him pick out what he wanted and
told him were the nearest shelter was.

So, to make a long story short, yes we
can help these people but we must certainly
be careful, especially after dark. Things can
turn violent very quickly.

Thanks again for your question.

All the best!

Al Abidin

P.S. When leaving someone like them behind, it would be a good
idea to use your peripheral vision to keep on eye on them
while you're also watching where you are going.

Self Defense/security tips for the Holiday

Here are a few things to keep in mind for the Christmas holiday shopping season:
  1. Put packages in the trunk (out of sight), before going to your next stop. This way, when you arrive at your next stop, any would-be burglars won't see anything of value inside your vehicle.
  2. Always be alert in public, watching for people who may jump out from behind a vehicle or from around a corner.
  3. Park next to a light pole, if even you have to walk a little farther. This will help you to see if anyone is standing near your vehicle.
  4. Use credit cards instead of carrying large amounts of cash. Credit cards can be replaced by making a phone call, cash cannot.
  5. Keep your doors locked and your windows up, so you can't be pulled from your vehicle.
  6. Get gas during the daytime, when fewer thugs are out buying their beer and smokes and causing trouble.
  7. Carry bags and purses tighly under your arm. This makes them much harder to grab.

That's all for today folks.

Have a great one!

Al Abidin

P.S. Remeber to get something nice for your mom or that special person in your life.
