I received this question recently and here is the reply I gave:
------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you for the great question about blocking.
When I went through the martial arts as I grew up, each style had some type of blocking that they used.
I didn't question it at the time, but as time and experience passed I started to realize that blocking a punch wasn't realistic.
When someone punches, you have no idea when it's coming, how fast or where they will hit you. It could be in your stomach or your face or your head and if they were faster than you it would be impossible to block it. For most people, action is faster than reaction.
Also, the whole concept of blocking implies that you must wait for the other guy to punch, instead of proactively moving to get out of there or punching your way out. Stopping to block is a waste of time. Why not punch your way out? Just explosively punch every attacker near you as you keep moving to get out of the situation.
If you hesitate even a fraction of a second on the street, a second and third attacker could tackle you from behind. Then both would try to beat you into the ground.
Forget blocking. Just focus on how fast you can punch them in the face and then get to safety. (Try to avoid their eyes and mouth if you can. You don't want their blood on you. Diseases, etc.)
I hope this helps.
Best regards,
Al Abidin

Parking lot safer: You and your car
Whenever you place valuables in your car, put them all in your trunk and if possible do this as you depart your current location.
If you wait until you arrive at your next destination, criminals may see and break into your trunk while you're away.
By the way, pull that GPS or other electronic unit off your dash and put it out of sight. This will help you avoid being a victim of a smash and grab burglary, where the thief smashes your window and grabs your stuff.
In addition to avoiding burglaries of your car it's important to preserve your life, by carefully choosing where to park in a parking lot.
Select a parking space that can easily be seen from the entrance of the building you are going to.
If there's a chance you'll remain past sundown, select a space that is not only visible from the entrance but also close to a light.
If you will be returning to your car during a desolate time, try to walk with someone else or ask the security guard for an escort.
Develop a survivor's attitude that as you walk, you stand tall, keeping your head up, making eye contact with everyone, and a determination that you will beat any threat to your safety, no matter what.
Develop a habit of walking with your car key tightly in your hand the way you would use it to open your car door.
Keep the key down at your side (for stealth) and if someone attacks you, stomp your foot as you step toward him to poke his face with lightening speed, 2 or 3 times if necessary. Stomp your forward foot each time you poke to make it powerful. (This should only be used if your personal safety is at risk.)
This will buy you time to get away.
As usual, I hope you never need to use that, however personal security isn't developed by accident.

Self-control and breathing
How important is breathing for your personal safety?
Well during an argument, you tend to have shallow breathing and an elevated heart rate which can cause you to lose self-control.
If the other person also loses self-control you could end up in a fist fight.
A simple way to maintain self-control and preserve your safety is through Combat Breathing which lowers your heart rate, enables you to think clearer and exercise self-control.
Combat Breathing is an exercise done in a set of fours.
-Inhale for 4 seconds.
-Hold your breath for 4 seconds.
-Exhale for 4 seconds.
-Then wait 4 seconds before the next inhale.
Do 4 repetitions of this drill to relax yourself and lower your heart rate.
As you relax you will be able to determine if the other person might turn violent and then choose the best response.
You might decide to stop talking, change the subject, defend yourself or even walk away.
Practice Combat Breathing in front of a mirror so you can learn how to do this discreetly. Then others won't realize what you're doing.
Make use of this drill to give yourself an advantage.
Be strong,
Kubler Al Abidin
P.S. Go beyond self-control and add an extra measure of personal safety to your life. Go to http://www.hikuta.com/order.html right now to get any of my self-defense DVD's for 20% off. This Memorial Day special ends on Saturday, June 5th and this will be your only reminder.

Cop killer and improvised weapons
Yes we can credit another disastrous failure to the criminal justice system for releasing another ex-con. Unfortunately he killed four cops in Lakewood, Washington. What a tragedy.
As I read the article about it on Fox news, something at the end caught my attention in the long list of crimes committed by this ex-con; improvised weapons. It mentioned two separate cases in Arkansas courtrooms where he tried to use improvised weapons. The first one was a metal hinge that he hid in his sock and the second one was a padlock that he brought into the courtroom.
The article said he intended to use the hinge so apparently he wasn't successful with that. He wasn't successful with the padlock either. He threw it at a bailiff, but he didn't aim good because the padlock hit the ex-con's mother.
This piece of the article caught my attention because I just finished an improvised weapon article for the December issue of Police Magazine. In the article we used a flashlight, a coffee mug and a clipboard as improvised weapons.
When one of my police detective friends heard I was writing the article he called and suggested that we use the weapons to hit watermelons to get a comparable result of what might happen to a human.
I liked the idea so we used the items to hit watermelons and we took photos and also a video of it.
Click here to see the video of what happened: http://www.hikuta.com/Article-videos.html
Be strong,
Kubler Al
P.S. I'm glad this ex-con wasn't successful with improvised weapons.

Push him back
When someone threatens you and moves forward to grab you, there is a simple move that you can do to escape.
Hold up both of your palms toward him and firmly say 'leave me alone'.
Having your hands up like this will prepare you to push him away if necessary.
Then if he moves in to grab you, place one of your open palms out where its almost touching his chest diagonally across from you.
So in other words if you are using your right hand you'll place it on his chest on his right side.
Then explosively crunch your stomach to bring your upper body weight forward.
As soon as you begin the crunch, step toward him with your right foot.
(I'm having you use the foot that is on the same side of your body as the hand that you'll be using to push him away.)
Your foot should land with stomp, as it touches the ground.
At the same time that you stomp your foot, quickly bring your right elbow forward to slam across his chest.
Your elbow will have a levering effect as you apply force starting from your palm which will be the first to touch his chest and then followed by your forearm and elbow. (Your forearm should be parallel to the ground.)
This move will help you to push him away even if he's bigger than you.
Then you should immediately go someplace safer.
Be strong!

P.S. Oh, by the way Al, a variation of this technique is on our Big Kuta seminar DVD's.

Wrist grab technique
A van suddenly stops right next to you and two men jump out.
One of them grabs you on the wrist and starts pulling you into the van.
Would you be able to escape?
If you're not absolutely sure, then consider this solution to help you escape.
Immediately step toward the person who is grabbing you.
If your right wrist is being grabbed, step forward with your right foot. (Vice-versa for the left)
As you are stepping towards him, quickly point your elbow at him.
The energy in your step and elbow movement should be forceful, which should cause the person to let go of your wrist.
You should also command with a loud voice, "Leave me alone", which should help any witnesses to recognize you as the victim and not the suspect.
Some people can't seem to tell the difference.
As soon as you break free, move away from them and watch where you are going.
Have a great day!

17 killed near El Paso
Last week, near El Paso, Texas, gunmen lined people up in a rehab clinic killing 17 of the 20 persons that they shot.
With our world becoming increasingly violent, whenever someone shows up with a gun you must assume they are going to use the gun.
Taking hostages these days often ends with the hostages being killed.
If someone shows up with a gun, try to get away immediately.
Look for all possible escape routes and rapidly increase your distance from the gunmen.
If you are quickly moving away from the gunmen, it will be very difficult for him or her to shoot you.
Now, you might say, well, I don't want to get shot, well, neither do I.
However its better to walk into a hospital emergency room where they can remove a bullet or two and stop the bleeding, than to end up dead in the street with a dozen bullet holes all over your body, because you stayed near the gunmen like a sitting duck.
Do you want him shooting at you from 5 feet away or would you rather be rapidly moving away where he'd have a very difficult time hitting you?
Even if he did shoot you, the technology in hosipital emergency rooms, (at least in the USA) has advanced to the point that people can survive being shot in the head, the eye and even the heart.
However, you choose to respond, you should decide now that you will take action to survive, even if that simply means running away from the gunman.
All the best!

How to Beat a Street Fighter - Part 2
What do I do if a street fighter is trying to kick me?
That's a question I received recently by email.
...I thought this was such a great question that I decided I should tell you my answer.
Here's how to neutralize virtually all kicks.
Move.
What? Too simple?
Well, I like to keep things simple.
We forget the complex stuff when a fight really happens, so why bother with it.
Okay. Let's get back to neutralizing the kick.
If you move in any direction your body will not be in the place where the kicker needs you to be to have power in his kick. Too bad for him.
Now if you move back or to the sides, his kick will probably miss or be very weak.
However, the encounter will not be over.
A better way is to move toward the kicker as your hand comes up with a powerful open hand strike, high on the attacker's chest.
You should aim at the area between the chin and the sternum.
Your open hand strike should slow down, stop or possibly even knock the kicker onto the ground, thus ending the attack with just one move.
You could also slam your forearm into his chest with similar results.
As for his kick, he'll probably bump his knee into your leg and never even be able to deliver his kick. Again, too bad for him.
Well, I hope you don't need to use this information, but here it is just in case.
Be Strong!

P.S. Oh, by the way, to help you be effective with this technique, use the startle move shown in my video.

How to beat a street fighter - Part 1
Here's what you can do if a street fighter is swinging at you, trying to punch your face.
Quickly move towards the attacker, to use one of your forearms to smash his mid-chest area. (This assumes that he is suddenly right in front of you and that you must defend yourself)
Keep your other hand up near your face, ready to defend.
Stomp with the foot that you use to step toward the attacker at the same time or slightly before you hit him with your forearm. This will increase your power.
If this doesn’t knock him flat on his back then start using your hands and forearms to explosively batter his face. (People don’t like to get hit in the face.)
Your movement should be like a temper tantrum, an adult size temper tantrum; quick and explosive.
He will be at your mercy as you deliver your wrath.
Your goal should be to quickly end it and leave.
If you’ve trained your reflexes, it will be easy for you to end the fight.
If you haven’t trained your reflexes…

Dangerous drinking fountain
Walking up to a drinking fountain can be cool and refreshing or violent and deadly.
I'm not referring to the germs that you'll find on some public drinking fountains.
Have you ever watched how people use a drinking fountain?
Most of them just push the button and stick their face in the water.
Although you might see a few of them look around slightly side to side before they drink.
You may also notice them looking around while they drink as they try to stay alert.
These alert people remind me of an ancient warrior named Gideon.
When he brought his men to take a drink at a stream, he watched them carefully.
Those who lapped up the water like a dog, oblivious to their surroundings were sent home, but those who were alert, looking all around while they drank were deemed fit for battle.
So what do drinking fountains and Gideon have to do with you? Good question.
The point is to stay alert when using a public drinking fountain.
Also keep in mind that you can push yourself away from the drinking fountain to quickly move away or defend yourself more quickly if necessary.
If someone gets really close to you and they have a weapon you could spit the water at their face to make them blink right before punching their face. Then get away.
Although, considering the cleanliness of some public drinking fountains you should try to always have bottled water with you so you can bypass the fountain.
Have a great week!

Its amazing what we can endure
Its amazing what we can endure.
Veteran police officer Peter Soulis was shot while checking on a suspect who was parked at a gas station at around midnight.
Then a gun battle began between the suspect and officer Soulis.
Soulis was shot several times, but the suspect was shot
22 times.
The suspect lived for 4 minutes afterward.
It's amazing what the human body can endure.
If you ever get shot, just realize that it's not over like they show you in Hollywood movies.
If you're alive after the first shot, chances are that you'll survive if you can get away or stop the threat.
I would learn some good self-defense to help you learn how to get away and also how to stop this type of threat.
I also recommend that you avoid gas stations late at night.
Be strong,

What a gal!
Recently two illegal aliens, Raphael Resindez, 23, and Enrico Garza, 26, broke through the front door of a home where 11 year old Patricia was home alone in Butte, Montana.
Patricia was upstairs in her room when the two men broke through the front door. She then ran to get her father's shotgun.
As Resindez came to the top of the stairs, Patricia defended herself by firing into the man's mid section. The wound was fatal and he never had a chance to use his 45 caliber handgun.
Thus the first threat to 11 year old Patricia's life was stopped.
Then Patricia noticed that Garza was about to come up the stairs and fired upon him as he then fled out the door and died out on the street. This second threat to Patricia's life was also stopped.
Thank God she was the clay shooting champion since she was 9 years old. It probably saved her life.
We never know when our life will be threatened but it sure helps to be prepared.
Be safe,
Kubler Al

President takes cover on Pennsylvania ave.
President Obama was walking down Pennsylvania ave., surrounded by secret service agents when suddenly he was escorted back into his limousine.
Someone saw a risk or a threat and the new president was taken to safety.
You probably don't have secret service protection, but whenever you see the signs of danger, you should take cover also.
It's not wise to just keep going and suffer the consequences.
This may require us to swallow our pride, but it's better to humbly arrive at home then to proudly arrive at the cemetery.
This reminds me of an old proverb...
A wise man sees danger and protects himself, but the fool continues on and suffers harm.
So remember seek cover whenever you see danger.
All the best,
